Day 1074 · Year 3 · The Great Tradition
Benedict on prayer, work, and rest
A monk in a collapsing empire designed a way of life that has lasted.
Today's passage
Acts 2:42-47
42They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
43A sense of awe came over everyone, and the apostles performed many wonders and signs.
44All the believers were together and had everything in common.
45Selling their possessions and goods, they shared with anyone who was in need.
46With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart,
47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Reflection
Benedict of Nursia lived in the rubble of the Roman empire. His response was not to chase importance but to design a daily rhythm — prayer, work, study, meals, rest — that would form ordinary Christians in stability. The earliest church in Acts looked a lot like that: 'devoted to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers.' Your life right now does not need more intensity; it probably needs more rhythm. Ask: what small daily structure would help your soul stay rooted while the world around you is loud?
From the great tradition · paraphrased
Benedict of Nursia · Medieval · 5th–6th c. · Italy
Benedict argued that a sustainable Christian life is built less on bursts of inspiration than on steady daily rhythms of prayer, work, Scripture, and shared meals.
Paraphrase only. Scripture, not any teacher, is the authority.
Think it through
- What four things did the earliest church devote themselves to?
- What rhythm in your day is missing?
- What is one small daily practice you could begin this week?
A prayer to pray
Ask God to build into your week one small rhythm — a fixed time for prayer, a daily reading, a regular meal with others — that holds you steady.
