Calvin on a Father who governs every detail
A pastor in plague-stricken Geneva preached a sovereign God.

Matthew 10:29-31
29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.
30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Reflection
John Calvin pastored Geneva through plague, refugees, and political chaos. His teaching on providence is sometimes caricatured. At its core, it is this: nothing happens to a child of God outside the loving rule of a sovereign Father. Jesus says the same — not a sparrow falls without the Father's notice; you are worth more than many sparrows. That does not make pain less painful. It does make it less random. The God who counts hairs is the God who is with you in this.
