Solomon

The wisest king — who still had to learn that wisdom without obedience is not enough.

Their story, briefly

  1. Asked God for wisdom to lead instead of riches or long life — and was given all three.
  2. Built the Jerusalem temple his father David had longed to build.
  3. Wrote much of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes; traditionally associated with Song of Songs.
  4. Took many wives from foreign nations who turned his heart to other gods.
  5. Ended his reign with a divided heart and left a kingdom that would soon tear in two.

How their life points to Christ

Jesus said, 'one greater than Solomon is here' (Matt 12:42). Solomon's wisdom was a gift; Jesus is wisdom himself (1 Cor 1:30). Solomon built a temple of stone that fell; Jesus is the temple where God and humanity finally meet, and he cannot be torn down.

Common misunderstandings

  • Solomon's story does not have a triumphant ending — Scripture is honest about how his compromise unraveled the kingdom.
  • Wisdom in Proverbs is not a guarantee of an easy life. It is a way of walking with God, not a formula for control.
