Why does prayer feel like talking to the ceiling?
Sometimes it does — even for mature Christians. Here's what the Bible and centuries of pastors actually say about that.

First — you are in good company. Psalm 13 is in the Bible because David felt the same. So did Job. So did Jesus, in the garden, asking for the cup to pass and getting no answer in words. Prayer being hard is not a sign you're doing it wrong. It's a sign you're praying.
Two practical things help most people: pray with Scripture open (let the Psalms put words in your mouth on the days you have none), and keep showing up. You are not building a feeling; you are building a relationship. The feelings come and go. He doesn't.
Scholar's note
The Christian tradition has a name for this experience: 'the dark night of the soul' (John of the Cross, 16th c.). Far from being failure, it is what spiritual writers (Teresa of Ávila, Luther, Bonhoeffer) describe as a normal stage of deeper trust — when prayer stops being about getting a feeling and becomes about wanting God.
Modern pastoral writers (Tim Keller, Prayer; Eugene Peterson, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction) point to the Psalms as the church's prayer book: 150 prayers across every emotion, written so you would have words when you don't.
