Can I be sure I'm saved?

Your security rests on what Christ finished, not on how strongly you felt when you prayed.

The worry almost everyone has

Most new believers hit a week where it feels like nothing happened. Maybe you sinned again. Maybe the emotion faded. That's normal, and it isn't evidence that God changed His mind.

Where assurance comes from

Scripture points your eyes outward. Jesus paid for sin completely on the cross and rose again. God promises eternal life to everyone who trusts in His Son. Your confidence stands on His promise and His work, not on your performance or your feelings.

Jesus says His sheep are held in His hand and the Father's hand. Nobody, including you on a bad day, can pry them out.

The evidence that follows

Real faith grows fruit over time: a new love for God, a new hatred of sin, a desire to obey, love for other believers. These don't earn salvation. They are signs of the life God already gave you. Look for direction, not perfection.

From Scripture

My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

John 10:27-30 (BSB)

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:1 (BSB)

And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

1 John 5:11-13 (BSB)

For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (BSB)

Put it into practice

  • Write 1 John 5:13 on a card and read it the next time doubt hits.
  • Ask: is my trust in Jesus, or in how I felt? Bring the answer to God in prayer.
