What to expect your first Sunday

Walking into a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. Here's a plain picture of what happens.

Before you go

Check the service time on the church's website. Arrive ten minutes early. Wear whatever is normal for you; most churches care far more about you than your clothes.

During the service

Most services include singing, prayer, Scripture reading, and a sermon of 30 to 45 minutes. There may be an offering; as a guest you're free to let it pass. Some weeks include communion. If you're unsure whether to take part, it's fine to quietly wait and ask afterward.

After

Say hello to the pastor, mention you're new to faith, and ask about a class or small group. Fill out a visitor card if there is one. Then go back the next week. Belonging takes repetition.

From Scripture

A song of ascents. Of David. I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”

Psalm 122:1 (BSB)

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

Colossians 3:16 (BSB)

And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:24-25 (BSB)

Put it into practice

  • Choose a church and put this Sunday's service time on your calendar.
  • Bring a notebook and write down one thing from the sermon.

These notes are pastoral commentary. Scripture quotations are from the Berean Standard Bible.
