What to do when you sin

Don't hide. Confess, turn, receive the forgiveness God promised, and get back up.

You will still sin

Becoming a Christian doesn't remove the old pull overnight. John writes to believers and says if we claim to be without sin we deceive ourselves. Expect the fight. It's a sign you're alive spiritually.

Four honest steps

1. Name it. Call the sin what God calls it, without excuses.

2. Confess it to God. He is faithful and just to forgive, because Jesus already paid for it.

3. Turn from it. Repentance means changing direction, which often means practical changes: deleting an app, ending a conversation, telling a trusted believer.

4. Receive forgiveness and move on. Shame says hide from God. The gospel says run to Him.

When it's a pattern

Some struggles don't go away quickly. Bring them into the light with a pastor or mature believer at your church. James tells us to confess to one another and pray for one another so we may be healed.

From Scripture

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:8-9 (BSB)

Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah

Psalm 32:5 (BSB)

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.

James 5:16 (BSB)

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4:15-16 (BSB)

Put it into practice

  • Pray through Psalm 51 slowly the next time you fall.
  • Identify one believer you could be honest with about a recurring struggle.
