Ecclesiastes

Life’s toil, pleasure, and achievements cannot be controlled or made permanent. The Teacher exposes human limits and calls readers to receive ordinary gifts and fear God.

Historical & literary context

The speaker is called the Teacher and presented in a Solomonic royal setting. Whether Solomon himself wrote the book, and its date, are debated.

Introduction and study notes are commentary, not Scripture.

The shape of the book

  • 3–11 · Time, injustice, work, and limits

A passage to begin with

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

13When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: Fear God and keep His commandments, because this is the whole duty of man. 14For God will bring every deed into judgment, along with every hidden thing, whether good or evil.
