Old Testament

Isaiah

Prophet of holiness and hope — who saw the Suffering Servant centuries early.

Well-attestedc. 740–680 BC, kingdom of Judah

Their story, briefly

  1. Saw the Lord 'high and lifted up' in the temple and was cleansed by a burning coal.
  2. Prophesied through the reigns of four kings of Judah, including the Assyrian crisis.
  3. Warned of judgment for injustice and idolatry, but always pointed to a remnant and a coming King.
  4. Foretold a virgin's child named Immanuel — 'God with us.'
  5. Described the Suffering Servant 'pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities' — written 700 years before the cross.

How their life points to Christ

No Old Testament book points to Jesus more clearly than Isaiah. The child born to us, the Prince of Peace, the wounded Servant who bears our sins — Jesus opens his ministry by reading from Isaiah and saying, 'Today this Scripture is fulfilled.'

Common misunderstandings

  • Isaiah 53 is read messianically in pre-Christian Jewish tradition too; it is not a later Christian reinterpretation.
