The Holy Spirit in you
Every believer has the Spirit. He is God's seal on you and the power for a changed life.
Who He is
The Holy Spirit is not a force or a feeling. He is a Person, fully God, who teaches, comforts, convicts, and guides.
What He does in you
At the moment you believed, the Spirit made you alive, came to live in you, and sealed you as God's own. He helps you understand Scripture, pray when you don't know what to say, and say no to sin.
Over time He grows His fruit in you: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Walking by the Spirit
You walk by the Spirit by depending on Him day by day: reading the Word He inspired, praying, obeying what He shows you, and staying close to His people in the church.
From Scripture
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.
And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the pledge of our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession, to the praise of His glory.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans too deep for words.
Put it into practice
- Read the fruit of the Spirit list and ask God to grow one of them in you this week.
- Before you read the Bible, ask the Spirit to help you understand it.
These notes are pastoral commentary. Scripture quotations are from the Berean Standard Bible.
